The Heating Energy Assistance Team (HEAT), Inc
HEAT is the oldest statewide fuel fund program in Georgia, which assists qualifying residents regardless of their energy source – natural gas, electricity, propane, oil, wood, coal, etc. HEAT began in 1983 when Atlanta Gas Light joined forces with Frances F. Pauley, an advocate for the poor, to form a team providing low-income citizens with much-needed help for energy costs. With the deregulation of Georgia’s natural gas industry, HEAT became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in May 2000. Funds are raised through partnerships with concerned citizens, energy companies, state government, corporations and other organizations. The Georgia Division of Family and Children Services distributes the money through community action agencies where residents apply at the local agency serving their county. More than $23 million has been donated and disbursed to more than 97,000 households during the past 33 years. Visit the directory of community action agencies to find the name and number of the agency that serves your county.
